ANNUAL RYEGRASS Lolim
mulitflorum Lam.
Annual ryegrass (Italian Ryegrass) is a very popular grass for overseeding
Southern pastures winter forage. It is also used to overseed warm
season lawn grasses to provide a green, economical grass cover from fall
to spring. Annual is planted on millions of acres of both lawns and
pastures each year. Works will planted with clovers and also
is good for planting with new lawns or pastures to provide fast
establishment, temporary erosion control, and a winter cover.

Description: Annual
Primary Adaptation:
Ryegrass tolerates wet, poorly drained soil. High moisture requirement for
growth and germination.
Uses: Pasture, and
occasionally hay or silage.
Planting Rate:
20-30 lbs. per acre, September-October
Fertilization:
Responsive to nitrogen.
Seasonal Production:
November-May
Management: In the
Gulf Coast area it may be seeded alone, but farther north it should be
seeded with a small grain like rye, wheat, or oats, and/or with clover.
Often used to overseed perennial warm season grass pastures in the South.
Pests: Armyworms, and
sometimes rust disease.

PLANTING:
Lawns: 5-10 lbs. / per 1000 sq. ft. -
Gulf Annual is most popular variety used.
Perennial Ryegrasses are also used for lawn overseeding.
Pastures: 25-35 lbs. broadcast. / 20 lbs. drilled.
Harrow or aerate for best results to make good seed / soil
contact.
