Establishment Of Kentucky 32 Tall Fescue Pasture Grass

It is important to eradicate your old pasture grass as it may contain endophyte infected fescue grass. All grass must be killed and remnant old fescue seed in the soil should be sprouted and killed to ensure a clean seedbed. Consult your local extension agent or chemical supply company for recommendations in herbicides and fertilizers.

A good starter fertilizer, and possibly lime to correct acidity, should be applied before planting. The need for fertilizer or lime may be determined by a soil test. Consult your county extension agency for soil testing. A clean, fine, firm seedbed will be optimum for success in establishing a new pasture. Seed may be drilled or broadcast then harrowed in no deeper than 1/4" - 1/2". Then roll to provide a good seed to soil contact.

Seeding Rate: 25 - 30 lbs. per acre
Planting Dates: Fall or Spring - when weather is mild and moist - irrigate if possible

Maintaining Kentucky 32 Tall Fescue Pasture

Horses or cattle should not graze Kentucky 32 pastures until well established. Avoid grazing pastures in wet, snowy, or frozen conditions as this will reduce pasture life.

As with any pasture, areas that horses paw and the areas of high traffic such as fence lines, corners and gates also found in cattle pastures should be overseeded annually. This will keep a dense tall fescue stand and eliminate the invasion of grassy weeds and broadleaf plants. Rotational grazing will keep fresh, palatable pasture available throughout the grazing season.
