Pearl Millet - Hybrid Pennleaf Brand
Pennisetum Glaucum Pennleaf brand pearl millet is a hybrid warm season forage grass used for forage for grazing live stock and horses. This is an improved hybrid pearl millet
with excellent leaf to stem ratio. If managed properly you will get high leaf yield per acre. Pearl millet also has a large area of adaptation or rather planting and growth area (see map below).
Harvesting &
Grazing Pearl Millet
Begin grazing or harvesting pearl millet forage when it reaches a height of 18 to 30 inches. Pearl millet should be rotationally grazed with grazing
stopped when plants reach 8-10 inches. The same instructions apply for hay production. To optimize pearl millet utilization, when harvesting for hay be sure and harvest no lower than
a height of 8-10 inches.
How To Plant Pearl Millet & Nutritional Information
PLANTING RATE: RATE: 25-30 lbs. Drilled or broadcast.
DATE: Late spring, after danger of frost through summer
METHOD: Plant into a firm seedbed no more than 1/4 inch deep.
FERTILIZATION: Although Pearl
millet tolerates lower pH and fertility than sorghum sudangrass hybrids, it also responds very well to lime and higher rates of fertility.
NUTRITION: With good management practices Pennleaf can produce Crude Protein levels of 13-15%; and TDN in the 50-60% range. However, environmental conditions and management
practices will determine individual results.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Pearl millet, as with all warm season grasses can develop high levels of nitrates if high levels of nitrogen fertilizer are applied during periods of poor
plant growth, such as drought.
Pearl Millet Area of Adaptation - Planting Area

As you can see pearl millet has a wide planting and growth area. It is well adapted to most of the U.S.
Before planting pearl millet seed be sure that all danger
of frost has passed
as this is a warm-seasoned grass. Again late spring at the earliest and you may plant through the summer at the latest.
